Just the way I am…

Day #12. I’ve had my niece and Great Nephew here for a couple of days already and I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying them being here.  And to be able to come down to my studio and play with supplies and have her ‘shop’ in my room of stuff I’m going to purge has been such fun.  She’s a special girl (as all my nieces are) and I’m not taking this visit for granted at all.  I’m so very blessed.  Ethan’s little personality is so stoic. He honestly cracks me up.  He has one look and it’s the cutest look ever.  Even when he cries he really doesn’t cry.  He’s such a content little man and I only wish I had some extra time to take off to be able to spend an entire day with them.

While she was drooling over supplies, I was creating an art journal page in my little recipe book I tore out of a magazine and made into a miniature art journal.  It only has 4 pages in it and I’ve had fun just playing in it.  I found some new napkins at either our Dollar Store or The Bargain Store…and because I don’t have many napkins yet, I thought I better pick them up…..bahahahahaha.

My napkin collection…..

The new ones I just had to have…..

20150512_234232

See!!!!  You totally would have bought them too…..right?!!!

I decided to use the one with the flower on it this evening and then grabbed my Lindy’s Stamp Gang Color Shots and used some of the colors from both sets Limor Webber designed called Tres Chic and Under The Board Walk. I used the c’est la vie cerise, tilt-a-wheel teal and cafe au lait.  Love these and I think tied in with the brown tones in the napkin quite well.  I sprayed some water color paper with some of the Color Shot color and added some water so the color would just start to tun together.  Then I dried it and drew out a few hearts.  I cut them out, distressed the edges and then colored them with one of my Faber Castell PITT artist pen big brush in Nougat 178.  I adhered them to the page using my Golden Regular Gel (Matte), added some cotton embroidery thread and my little quote.  I added more splatters in the three colors and I was done!

I love the color combo of browns and blue tones.

Thank you for sticking with me on this ride.  I appreciate your comments and suggestions.  Until tomorrow…..

Day #10!  I think there will be allot of moments to enjoy this week.  I just happen to have one of my nieces down for a few days with her 10 month old baby who is the cutest!  He’s definitely stolen our hearts this week.  He was greeted by all 5 of my grandchildren this evening……not sure if he wanted to run/crawl away or just lay there and play dead in the hopes they’d leave him alone!!  It was a very loud busy household for a couple of hours but he took it all in stride and never missed a beat…..even when he was being laid on by Dane to give him a hug.  This is my sweet little Great Nephew….

He had quite the fun afternoon with three of his cousins at the park and and sitting in the little battery operated quad.

And had a blast swinging and the rest of them driving the quad around the park.

By the time I got home from work they were inside and ready to eat!!  We went and picked up the last two grandkids and they all had a blast.  I wouldn’t trade the mayhem and volume for anything.

I know now a very interesting post to most of those who follow me…..but these little people are the most important little souls in my life……my art is a very close second….lol.

Thanks so much for checking in…..until tomorrow.

An amazing Mom

An amazing Mom

Day #9 – and Happy Mothers Day to all Mom’s out there.

I went looking for a picture of my Mom and I had a really hard time finding one of just the two of us!!!  That is something I’m going to have to change this fall when we head to Kelowna for my nephews wedding.  This picture was taken on the front step of the old farm house in Manitoba where my Dad grew up.  We had the amazing opportunity to go and visit this summer at our family reunion.  So many memories….

To say I think I have the best mom is just fact.  She has a strength, faith, love and understanding like no one else I know.  She raised 4 daughters…..that in itself deserves a medal!!  She accepts people for who they are…..no judgments made. I cannot even begin to list all the things she’s done for me and taught me.  She’s nurtured me, taught me, dressed me, held me, shouted at me, kissed me, loved me unconditionally. There’s nothing like my moms hugs…..no matter how old I am. It just seems to make everything better and two provinces away is way too far away sometimes…..so Skype is my best friend.  There are not enough words I can say to describe just how important my mom is to me and what a powerful influence she continues to be in my life.

So, Happy Mother’s Day Mom……. I love my mom to the moon and beyond.

Fall page with White Birch Trees

Fall page with White Birch Trees

Day #8……I have 43 minutes to get this typed up and submitted!!  Pfft……no problem!

I saved one of those little pull out booklets that come in magazines sometimes.  This one happened to be a little recipe book.  I decided I needed something little to create in and had seen others using magazine type papers to do their mixed media art on and thought….why not?!  If my memory serves me correctly, I think I did this for a challenge one month over in the Facebook group called Mixing It Up Everyday.  My good friend Sandee Setliff started it as a place for people to share whatever they wanted without worrying about rules.  It’s a fun group of women and if you haven’t checked it out you really should!

This was a fall based theme and I wanted to see if I could use my black gesso and create birch trees with some white paint.  It worked!!!  I colored some book paper with some of my alcohol inks and then punched out some leaves with a Matha Stewart branch punch that has little leaves on it……now, that was allot of leaves!!!  I also colored some chipboard letters with my alcohol inks and used some fall colored sort of puffy stickers I had that I didn’t think I’d ever use on anything as I’m not much for stickers….let alone the puffy ones!!  And of course…..some splatters.  Gotta love the look of splatters.  ❤

So, this is what my double page spread looked like!

IMG_3744

Did I mention that was allot of leaves to glue on??

IMG_3743

Lettering I learned from none other than Sandee Setlliff herself…..here’s a link to the YouTube video for her Wonky Letters.

IMG_3739

I really like how this turned out.  It lead to other black gesso pages so it must have been a good experiment!!

Background marathon…

Background marathon…

Day #7 in our #90daysofblogging. Tonight I had the pleasure of heading over to my fellow mixed media artists friends house and we had fun playing with our supplies we haven’t used for awhile….or ever in some cases as we made a bunch of tissue paper backgrounds.  I grabbed stencils I’d made on mu Cricut about a year ago that I’ve never used yet along with I think most of my Lindy’s sprays….some of which hadn’t seen the light of day in some time.  I think my fingers will be a dark sort of blue, brown, red color for a couple of days!  I found out I have some pretty cool stencils!  I played with combining some colors and then I had a go with my new Inktense Blocks…..didn’t get the effect I was looking for.  They don’t really move around and blend out like a water color crayon…..but I did get a better effect when I sprayed my craft mat and then colored directly onto the mat and then placed the tissue paper over top and scrunched.  It’s a very subtle piece but very pretty none the less.  Karen had some black tissue paper that we decided to play with…..Oh My Goodness!!!  Such cool prints with that and my Lindy’s spray set called Winter Wonderland….amazing shimmer!!!

Check it out!!

IMG_4278

Each one has some great properties and I’m not really sure which is my favorite!  Here are some close ups so you can see that amazing shimmer in these sprays!

IMG_4281

IMG_4280

IMG_4279

I was really having fun with the black tissue paper…..i think I may owe Karen a few sheets back…lol.  I did some layering of stencils…..flipped them over and did reverses of almost every one of them.  Use allot of stencils and had a blast.  I’ll just post the pictures of the backgrounds I created this evening…

IMG_4286

Used some of my Caribbean Cruise set on these two….along with a few others.  Subtle but will make for a nice start to a background.

IMG_4282

IMG_4284

On these ones I think I almost like the reverse of the stencil better!!

IMG_4285

The bottom one is the one with the Inktense Blocks and the top one is also with the Blocks but with a couple of ‘found’ stencils using things from around the house and my Jack In The Pulpit Teal…..GORGEOUS color and so full of shimmer!! Check it out!

IMG_4287

IMG_4288

Yummy!!!  And of course, what do you use to mop up all the excess spray…..coffee filters!!  Those puppies have a few layers on them…..more great supplies to add texture and color to a page!

IMG_4289

Well, this has been a pretty picture intense post…..I guess if I would have been smart I probably could have got about 4 posts out of these…..ooppsss……lol

Choosing to shine

Standard
Choosing to shine

I’m on day number 6 in my #90daysofblogging !!  I’m seriously going to run out of things to blog about!  There may be a few posts where I just ramble…..about nothing…..at all…..hmmmm.

I tried my hand at another magazine collage art journal page.  No prompt cards……just sitting and creating from the heart.  I kind of wanted the background to have a sort of rough textured wall look.  I used my Super Heavy Gesso by Liquitex and applied it with a palette knife to give it the look I was looking for.  I took three of my Liquitex Basics acrylic paints in Burnt Siena, Burnt Umber and Yellow Oxide and used a sponge and applied the paint to cover the background completely.  I adhered the girl onto the page with my Golden Gel Medium.  I wanted to doodle on her and began with just the whispy lines in her hair….one thing lead to another…..and she was covered in dots!!  I quite like it and was okay with the look.  I’m not sure now I should have added the brick stencil….it’s okay, but I’m wondering if I would like it better without the white brick.  I may at some time go back and maybe add some color to them…..or not….lol.  I loved the quote and just felt it really applied to this page, especially with the ray of sunlight beaming across her face.  “If you don’t SHINE you’re just dull.  Choose to SHINE.”  Fitting, don’t you think?!  I’m not one to go out into a room and shine.  I much prefer to ‘observe’.  It’s not that I don’t go and talk to people…..I’m kind of a chatty one when you get me going…..I just don’t like the lime light on me……at all!

Here’s some close ups of the page and the final result….

I love the look of collaged magazine images and there is one artist on YouTube who I love to watch.  I love what she does with her pages and love her style.  Check out her channel!  She goes by PackerDi.

Sassy or sexy?

Day 5!  I can see this is definitely going to be a challenge….but in a good way I hope!!  I’ve been having some fun with my Art Journal Prompt Cards I made and decided to have Karen Burchill join me again for another round.  She dealt herself out 5 of her cards before she came over to my studio and I did the same.  I apparently like to work with only my fingers as I dealt that card out to me again….lol.  Bring on the Gel Medium!!.  The one that really had me a bit worried was the one that instructed me to turn to page 29 of the first magazine I found and use an image from that page.  Did I luck out!!  Here’s the cards I was dealt:

IMG_4276

Colored paper towels I have lots of as I always keep them.  Couldn’t find my cheese cloth so I went and grabbed a gauze bandage from my first aide kit…..shhhhh.  Spent some time peeling Gel Medium from my fingers again….kinda getting good at it!  Karen gave me the idea of adding the color to her eyes and lips and I love it!!  Oh!  And to the wings as the white gauze just didn’t have enough oomph to pop from the page.  I quite like how she turned out….a little sassy sexy maybe?  LOL.  Here’s the completed page:

Paris anyone?!

Paris anyone?!

I’ll be skimming under the wire with my day 4 post!!!  Forgot to do it up last night and post date it…..ooppsss.  So, I mentioned my Art Journal prompt cards my friend did in my last post and then naturally I had to make up a set as well!  We were at our cabin a few weeks ago and I needed some inspiration to create a page.  I dealt myself out 5 cards and then sat and looked at them…..oh boy.  I dealt myself out some doozies, so I thought.  Check them out!

IMG_4275

Really?!  I decided to take the leap and give the prompts a try.Have you ever tried to apply gel medium to a page with your fingers and then try and adhere a napkin to the page with those said gel filled fingers…..it make for some good comedy I”m sure….if it wasn’t me struggling!!!  I also added a layer of a couple of magazine collage items and while everything was drying I proceeded to peel the multiple layers of gel medium from my fingers.  I used my favorite stencil, my bricks and tinted the Faber Castel Whipped Spackle with some grey Gelato to add another layer of texture.  Some light shading with my grey charcoal pencil, some highlights on the brick with a lighter grey Gelato to give the bricks a more dimensional look.  Stamped my image onto cardstock, inked the edges and ta daaaa!!!  A finished art journal prompt page.  🙂

Here it is!

I must really love butterflies. ;)

I must really love butterflies. ;)

Day 3 of our #90-day blog challenge!! Last evening we had all the family over for supper.  Our oldest son finished his last year of electrical school and thought it would be nice to have everyone over to celebrate.  We also had two of our 5 grandchildren stay for a sleep over which is always fun.  They even ‘helped’ us rake leaves for an hour or so.  I love having my grand-babies close…..so very blessed.  I do have to say, yard work is NOT something I enjoy and my body is so totally with me on this one at the moment.  My 55 year old body is really NOT impressed with me right now and is doing everything it can to let me know it too…..which I so appreciate.  (my oldest grandson likes to remind me quite often, “Grandma, you’re two 5’s, right?”)  I’m feeling more like two 8’s right now I think….lol.  Ibuprofen in most certainly my friend this evening…..and my ice pack.

I recently connected with a friend from town again a couple of months ago.  We’d met through a mutual friend and when that friend moved away we kinda drifted apart.  She found me through one of my Facebook groups called Journaling by 5’s when she was watching one of my video’s of the process.  She messaged me on FB and I can’t even tell you how happy I was to hear from her again…..and then to find out she’s a fellow Mixed Media artist was the icing on the cake.  We collaborate wonderfully together and have allot of fun when we get together.  We’ve been meeting probably once a week ever since.

She had found either a blog post or a YouTube video that was talking about Journal Prompt cards.  She immideately grabbed hold of the idea and just flew with it.  She made up a complete 52 deck of cards with 52 different journaling prompts on them to use whenever she had a creative block…or just because to change things up.  Well of course we had to give them a trial run!  She dealt out 5 cards for me and over to her place with my supplies I headed.  These are the 5 cards I received that evening:

2015-04-12 20.04.41

Now, I’d seen Karen’s set of Inktense Blocks, however, I’d never used them before so I was kinda happy to get this card.  WOW……Those blocks are so much fun and indeed intense!  I started my page out with some metallic paint I had that was actually suppose to be used to create a mirror effect.  Not so much on paper, which is what I wanted but with the metalic look.  I adhered some torn strips and pieces of under paper to the page and then took the Inktense blocks and used them as is….with water……through stencils……..with a stamp.  I took a butterfly mask I have and cut some circles from a sheet of light cardstock and then painted the background white, except where the circles and butterfly mask was.  Did some black pen work around the masked shapes and then added some of inktense block to some of my Faber Castel Whipped Spackle (my favorite paste medium.  ❤ )  and mixed it up.  Is there anything these blocks can’t do?!  Colored the spackle beautifully.  A few black ink splatters and some drippage and I called this puppy done!

IMG_4238

IMG_4239

IMG_4237

This was a very fun page to do and I believe it was not too long after that I went onto Amazon and purchased a set of my own.  I added some black pen work around the masked images and of course outlined the entire page with my Pitt Artist Big Brush pen and blended it in.

As always, I very much appreciate you stopping by and always appreciate any comments.  Have a blessed day.

Butterflies!! Love them!

Standard

Okay!!  Day 2 of the 90-day Blog Challenge!  I LOOOOVE creating with napkins.  They give fantastic texture to a page if you want them too…..but the patterns and images on them are just so fun and with this particular napkin…..so vibrant and fun!!  I’d found this quote and just had to try it on a journal page.  I love to play with different lettering and was really pleased with how this page turned out!!  There is really nothing more than a couple of pieces of this napkin, some doodling with a black and white pen and my quote.  The colors in this napkin lent itself beautifully to an art journal page and there was really nothing more I could add to it.  Does that make it cheating and not really an “art” journal page…..I don’t know…..and I really don’t care!!!  LOL.

IMG_4235

I just LOVE the colors and the depth of layers of color on these napkins!  I used my Unibal Signo white gel pen which I think is an amazing pen that writes over anything!!!  There is a trick to using it and you have to be patient and write slow…..but it covers like a dang!  The black pen I used on this page was my go to Pilot Perma-Ball pen, which like it’s counterpart will seriously write over anything!  This lettering style I learned from my friend Sandee Setliff in a series of lettering YouTube videos she did.  Here’s a link to her YouTube channel so you can check her videos out!!
