Extraordinary……Strong……

Day #12.  This was the last evening with my niece and her little guy.  He’s such a sweetheart and I’m going to miss them both!!  He’s such an easy kid to have around.  I snuck some snuggles and  pictures in and even got a bit of a smile….blurry picture of course….but it’s a smile!!

I’ll get more snuggles with this little man in Sept…..although he’ll probably be walking by then and I’ll have to chase him down to get the snuggles.

The page I’m going to share today is one I did last year and was the first page I created in my little recipe booklet art journal.  It was my first kick at the can at trying to do a collage with magazine images.  I colored the background with acrylic paints and then started to pick out my images and finishing them off with some doodling.  This was a fun page to do and I quite liked it when it was all done.  Added some background stamps and some scribbles.  Did some shading with my Stabilo All pencil….

Even put a UPC symbol on the page….lol.  Some punched circles from one of my magazine pages.  There’s allot  going on with this page!!

20150513_221126

It’s funny, when I look at this page I remember choosing the words and phrases to go on it and thinking they’d be my mantra.  To be “Extraordinary Everyday”.  That I was an “Inspiring Artist”.  I’d like to think I”m “Strong”.  I put a “piece of myself” in every creation I make.  And often, my page will “set the mood” for whatever I’m going through at that time.  Do I hit the mark everyday…..depends what my inner critic is telling me.  Sometimes I feel Extraordinary….sometimes not so much.  I think I’ll always be an Inspiring Artist….lol.  And I’m probably Stronger than I think.  Pretty fitting cover I think.

Okay, that’s it for today.  We’re headed off to the cabin this weekend with our oldest and his family so I’m thinking I should have lots to blog about this weekend.  Until tomorrow…..peace out!

Choosing to shine

Choosing to shine

I’m on day number 6 in my #90daysofblogging !!  I’m seriously going to run out of things to blog about!  There may be a few posts where I just ramble…..about nothing…..at all…..hmmmm.

I tried my hand at another magazine collage art journal page.  No prompt cards……just sitting and creating from the heart.  I kind of wanted the background to have a sort of rough textured wall look.  I used my Super Heavy Gesso by Liquitex and applied it with a palette knife to give it the look I was looking for.  I took three of my Liquitex Basics acrylic paints in Burnt Siena, Burnt Umber and Yellow Oxide and used a sponge and applied the paint to cover the background completely.  I adhered the girl onto the page with my Golden Gel Medium.  I wanted to doodle on her and began with just the whispy lines in her hair….one thing lead to another…..and she was covered in dots!!  I quite like it and was okay with the look.  I’m not sure now I should have added the brick stencil….it’s okay, but I’m wondering if I would like it better without the white brick.  I may at some time go back and maybe add some color to them…..or not….lol.  I loved the quote and just felt it really applied to this page, especially with the ray of sunlight beaming across her face.  “If you don’t SHINE you’re just dull.  Choose to SHINE.”  Fitting, don’t you think?!  I’m not one to go out into a room and shine.  I much prefer to ‘observe’.  It’s not that I don’t go and talk to people…..I’m kind of a chatty one when you get me going…..I just don’t like the lime light on me……at all!

Here’s some close ups of the page and the final result….

I love the look of collaged magazine images and there is one artist on YouTube who I love to watch.  I love what she does with her pages and love her style.  Check out her channel!  She goes by PackerDi.

So, day 6 of blogging is done…..what the heck am I going to do tomorrow?!!  lol

Thank you so much for sticking with me on this journey…..soooo appreciated.  Please feel free to let me know you were here.  😉

Also, take some time to check out my friends blogs who are also on this 90 day challenge with me.

Watercolor cards

Standard

Last night I was at Mixed Media Mondays with Tracey Weinzapfel  UStream class  and she decided to show us how easy it is to just wip up some simple doodled type water-color cards in under an hour and a half…..and she just talks for the first 15 minutes…..so basically in one hour.  You did catch the ‘just wip up some cards’.   I thought, this should be easy enough to follow along and do in an hour, so I cut up some water-color paper and filled my water reservoir for my brushes, and grabbed my water-color paints and sat down to paint along.   I was ready……ya…..not so much.

By the time she was done one card and helped her Dad also finish his card, I was still painting mine.  She was onto the second card already, so I tossed the first one aside and decided I’d just finish it after the show.  I grabbed the second card and started following along.  I was still filling in the background as she was stamping on her sentiment and inking up the edges of the second card.   Onto the third card she went….so I tossed my second one to the side and thought, I may as well finish two while I’m at it.  Ya, the show was over and I was still once again painting in my background color on the third card.  How she ‘wips up’ three cards in an hour…..and I mean completed and ready to glue onto a card front and mail, I have no idea.  I probably painted for another half hour or so after the show just to finish.  Now, in all fairness to my, I’m still learning how to even use water colors and am prob too anal about getting them ‘just right’, but I do kinda like the end result.  Very simple doodled cards that actually look pretty darn good.

Here’s my three cards…

IMG_2885

I followed along and did what Tracy did so these aren’t my own designs.  I thought I was probably in enough over my head without coming up with a new idea of my own to complete in an hour!  lol

Here’s a close up of each card….

I have to say I did learn allot.  Messy doodling looks pretty darn good on a card……leave some white space between your background and your flowers or the water-color paint will pool together……just let it go and don’t aim for perfection with this technique.  (that was the hardest one…..I kept wanting to go in a fixed the ‘out of the lines’ stuff….lol.

This evening I’m off to catch Limor 1278 Mixed Media  on UStream and I can’t wait!  She’s been away for a few weeks now and I’ve missed her shows too.

Thanks for dropping by. Till next time!

Up, Up and Away…

Standard

Over in the Facebook Group Journal52, our first weeks journal prompt was Up, Up and Away!!  I decided to pull out one of my mixed media kits I purchased from the Frosted Designs on-line store for this page.  I absolutely love the fun whimsical feel to this kit!!  There’s still a couple left and best of all…..it’s on sale right now so head on over and get one of these ordered!  I chose a page from the kit that had this cool little cloud type thing with a great saying in it.  I decided to build on that theme and go with it!  I did a bunch of doodling…..added some more butterflies….some drippage (which I don’t particularly like now….lol).  I’m using some watercolor paper for this journal and we’ll see how that works.  I sprayed the paper down with some Lindy’s Stamp Gang spray called Mad hatter Mint which is one of the colors from the Mad Hatter set and it matches the colors in the paper just about bang on!  The drippage and splatters were added using another spray from the Mad Hatter set called Tweedle Dee Denim.

So, week one journal prompt is finished.  I believe we get our next prompt on Sunday, so we’ll see what that one brings!

Thanks for coming to check out page one…..I hope to see you again soon!

Creative Lettering

Standard
Creative Lettering

I’ve been MIA for the last week or so while I was helping our oldest son hang the drywall on his ceiling of his new house he’s building so he could get the insulation blown into the attic and get the heat turned on.  I have to say I’ve become quite handy with the tools and can handle myself quite well with any of the power tools needed to construct a house and can hammer next to most men.  I have fallen off a ladder in the past and split my thumb open with a hammer…..but we won’t dwell on that…..lol.

I’ve been dying to follow Sandee on her Sunday’s with Sandee video’s and tutorials for the last two weeks here and here on the Frosted Designs Blog.  I finally had a chance this evening to grab my paints and just play.  Actually, I grabbed my Gelato’s and my water-color crayons to be exact.  I made my background following her video tutorial called ‘Going Dotty’ and then grabbed my black Faber Castell Pitt Pens for my lettering following her written tutorial called ‘Typography & Lettering’.  I love to play around with different fonts and this was a particular fun double page spread to do.  Here’s what I came up with:

IMG_2597

I did the background base with some random Gelato’s and dried it.  Then I took my medium-sized dot stencil I made for myself using my Cricut and grabbed some more random Gelato’s and put the circles on.  Then I took another home-made stencil with various sized of larger dots and colored them in with some water-color crayons and blended them in.  I then took my black acrylic paint, my stipple brush and two more home-made stencils being the various sizes and shapes of butterflies and my silhouette lady, all cut out using my Cricut.  I doodled around the larger circles and did my lettering and yup…..calling them both done!  Here’s what each individual page looks like:

IMG_2600

IMG_2601

Looking at the pages now I prob should have added some black and/or white small paint splatters and I may still go back in and do that.  We’ll see….lol.

That’s it for now…..I’m off to bed.  Thanks once again for coming by to take a peek.  I appreciate you all very, very much!

Learning to grow….

Standard

We came back to our little piece of paradise again last night.  Our cabin really does feel like a retreat to us.  One more night before we have to head back to reality….::sigh::

I received some happy mail a while ago from a very sweet friend I met on Facebook – Eddyth Andy Watson (also known as Andy).  She offered to send me a hand made flower stamp she’d made along with some foam alphabets that I’d really like to try and figure out how to make into stamps as well….lol.  There was also a little box full of graffiti type heavy embellishment stickers that I just LOVE!  I wanted to play with both and grabbed for the stickers first.  They had awesome colors to play with and decided I’d try my hand at ‘painting’ a complete background using only a credit card as my brush and trying to incorporate the colors from the stickers.  Well……I sort of succeeded……sort of not.  It ended up being one of those pages that was…..well…..busy when I was done….LOL.  I’m not too sure about it.  Kinda like it….kinda get dizzy looking at it.  I did find the perfect quote to put on the page though!

IMG_2238 (2)

“An essential aspect of creativity is  not being afraid to fail”.  There was a time not too long ago that this page being in my actual Art Journal would have bothered the heck out of me!  Now…..I look at it as a learning opportunity of what not to do next time!  LOL  I do have to admit I loved doodling all over it though!  I find my zen-doodling very relaxing and almost meditative.  It definitely takes your mind off of anything you may be worried about or bothered by at the moment as you’re concentrating on the doodle so much that your mind really doesn’t wander a whole lot.  Here’s a close up of some of the texture too.  I started out by literally grabbing every piece of scrap paper I had on my work-space and adhering it down!

IMG_2240 (2)

Once I was done with this little experiment, I took that daisy stamp and some book paper….a couple of Lindy’s sprays and went to town!  I started out by drenching my page with my Caribbean Blue and Luscious Lime Lindy’s sprays and then letting them combine and drip to their hearts content!  I kept adding layers until I was happy with the results.  Then I took my book paper, some yellow paint and stamped my little daisy stamp from Andy.  I LOVED them!!  This is such a cool stamp and I know it’s going to be one I’ll be gravitating too allot in the future.  You rock Andy!!  🙂  I also added some book page leaves that I painted a lime green….although they kinda look yellow…..oh well.

IMG_2247 (2)

I hand wrote out the quote which I think fits perfectly with the page.  I used my charcoal pencil around the flower, the leaves and the edges of the page.  I doodles some swirly thingy’s and TAA DAAAA!!  This page makes me very happy with I look at it.

Check out that drippage and spray splatter I also added.  :o)

Okay….I’m off to go and help hubby clean out our shed before winter.  Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by!

My cup is filled…

Standard

This month has been an exercise in ‘Letting It Go’.  Soooo much easier said than done…..but I’m making baby steps and the Art Journey has been SO worth it!   Do I still wish what I end up with was better…..yup, sometimes.  When I’m first finished it all I can see are what I perceive to be mistakes.  But each time…..when I step back and sleep on it or just close the book for a few hours….I come back and appreciate what I’ve just created.  I’m trying techniques for the first time actually IN MY JOURNAL and not on a loose piece of canvas in case I mess up and want to throw it away.  I have more ideas bombarding my mind than I have time to sit and paint.  I think I need to start an idea book.  I laid awake last night and couldn’t sleep…..I mean…..seriously?!  It was just one idea after another.   Will I likely get around to painting them all……maybe.  Will I remember what they all were for the next time I’m stumped and don’t know where to start….probably not….LOL.

I joined Tracy once again for her Mixed Media Monday free Ustream classes.  I decided to paint along with her this evening and for the first time, I did my own creation.  I had one of those ideas floating around in my head so I just went with it!  I also used an old credit card for the first time as my painting device and not a brush…..YIKES!!  I ended up using a brush just around the outer edges but probably wouldn’t have had to.  I also used my home-made texture paste and just slapped it on around the whole frame of the page…..again, something I’ve never done before.  I’ve always used a stencil to apply the paste.  I really like how it turned out and although it’s hard to really pick up, I love the ‘feel’ of the page when you run your hand over it.  I used some of my Lindy’s sprays to add color to the paste once it was dry and to add the drippage by unscrewing the spray head and shaking it over the page.IMG_2157

Then I’d hold up the book and tap it on the table to get the droplet to drip down the page while I was drying it with the heat gun.  The thing you need to do when you do this technique is, be sure to screw the spray heads back onto the bottles when you’re done!!!  Ask me how I know this…..I had a little puddle of green spray ink spill onto my completed page as I was putting it away.  A quick grab of the paper towel and it was mopped up and no damage done.  You would think I would have learned something from this little exercise….you would think.  I go to pick up the pink spray bottle…..not as lucky as I was with the green one.  It tipped right over and landed away from my page….and ran under my computer.  I was able to grab it before the whole bottle spilled and got it mopped up with a paper towel as well.  Check it out!!  I think I have a pretty nice background for my next Journal page….I’ll just Mod Podge the paper towel to the page….lol.

IMG_2153

I have some nice wrinkles goin’ on here that will look pretty cool and add some great texture to my page…..LOL.

After I had that all cleaned up I decided to do some doodling around my page.  I put a series of lines, circles, flowers, crosses, wavy lines all along the bottom.  It turned out pretty darn cool I think!!  Here are some close-ups of my doodling and the texture.  Oh!  I also used one of my texture scraper thingy’s that I’ve had forever and have never tried.

Thanks for popping in once again.

I Am Enough

Standard

I don’t know about you, but I have this endless list of amazing crafty/artistic people I follow through YouTube.  I’m not even sure how many subscriptions I have to YouTube channels!  I don’t always watch every new video they post and I have some I watch more than others.  Christy Sobolewski is one I will usually watch when she posts a new video.  Yesterday I watched this video and loved the background technique she used!  Although I didn’t nail it exactly, and mine ended up a little darker, I love the end result.  Sooo much texture and depth -layer upon layer of book pages Mod Podged down and then ripped off…..paint applied and then partially wiped off…..  It was hard to capture it in a picture.

IMG_2125

I love the layers of color…..very subtle.  I’m not one to draw/paint faces so I didn’t even try to incorporate that part of her video so I chose to just draw and paint a butterfly.  The quote I saw on someone’s FB post yesterday too and it just seemed to grab me.  I can’t say I like how it turned out on the page, but it’s there and I’m going to leave it……all part of the learning as I explore this act of Letting It Go.  The colors of the butterfly are some of the same ones I incorporated into the background layers on the page.

IMG_2124

I doodled, I outlined, I had fun with the butterfly.  This is one background I’ll do more of.   Thanks for taking the time to stop by.  As always, I do so appreciate it.

Remember me??

Standard

Hello to my long lost blogging family…..I think I’m making my way back to the creative world….lol.  It’s been a long time since I’ve spent any time playing and getting all full of paint and ink and you have no idea how good it feels!!  I’ve been following two amazing ladies on Ustream and they’re sooooo stinkin’ talented!  This evening I decided to paint along with Tracy.  Tracy has a Ustream channel called twStudios and she has a free class every Monday night.  Check her out here!  The other amazing lady is Limor and her Ustream channel is called Limor 1806 Chic Scrapbooking Designs and Mixed Media Art and she broadcasts her free class every Tuesday evening……check out her channel here.

So, this evening Tracy did a page in her Art Journal and I decided to do a canvas.  I pretty much followed along with Tracy but did more doodling than she did and used a different title for my canvas.  Check it out……

IMG_2017

I’m still struggling right now with finding my own creative mojo, however, it felt so good to just grab some paint and go that I think I’ll be trying one out on my own again soon.  I doodled around the edges of the canvas as well and wrapped the blue flower around.

IMG_2018

IMG_2020

So, there you have it.  It’s very bright and colorful…..not what I usually grab to work with…..but I have to say I kinda like the colors and may venture out into the world of new and different…maybe…..lol.

That’s it for this post.  Short and sweet.  I’ve missed all of you and I’ve missed blogging.  Let’s see if this kick starts me into creativity again.  Thanks so much for checking in…..I do SO appreciate it!

Hugs,

Yvonne
